Your alternator is part of your vehicle's charging system, and probably the most important one. That's because it takes the mechanical energy produced by the engine and turns it into the electricity that feeds most of your parts, systems, and accessories.

How it works is direct. The crankshaft converts the vertical motion of the engine pistons into rotary motion. That moves a belt that's attached to a pulley located on the rotor shaft. The spinning of the rotor shaft agitates magnetic coils inside, resulting in them creating a magnetic field. A rectifier captures that field as AC power and transforms it into DC power that your battery, windows, windshield wipers, entertainment system, and other parts use.

However, even the highest quality alternator can go bad. When that happens, your battery will quickly drain since it's the only remaining source of electricity.
